Teaching
Why do I teach art?
Making art has opened my life to wonderful opportunities. One of them is teaching art. When I'm not in the studio (or painting outdoors), I'm spreading the good news about making art and helping educators, students, and schools integrate art with their curriculum. I think that my passion for art comes from the fact making art helps us to create/design our life. You get to come up with ideas, compositions, masterpieces, and sometimes not-so-masterpieces. Thats ok, it's just like life!
I have been teaching art making for over 12 years all across the Chicagoland area. Sometimes teaching takes me on the road to places like Columbus Junction in rural Iowa, Michigan State University, and the high desert of Abiquiu/Ghost Ranch in New Mexico. I like to teach art hands on, meaning we learn and make art at the same time. It's like when musicians come together and jam. There's lots of experimenting and opportunities to express ourselves and our ideas. I think drawing is very important, so there's lots of drawing in my classes. I teach by example, so let's make art!

Guillermo teaches this class at Ghost Ranch, New Mexico every summer; now you can take this course in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood. In this course students will explore the history and art of the Mexican Retablo. Students will draw inspiration from this folk-art tradition and create retablo-style paintings based on family stories. Retablos will be painted on metal panels and incorporate a short written story into the art. This is a great opportunity for adult family members and friends to take a class together. All artistic levels are welcome.
